InterContinental Hotels Group grows its boutique hotel portfolio with the opening of its third UK Hotel Indigo hotel, Hotel Indigo Glasgow. The hotel is on Waterloo Street, in the heart of the financial district and within walking distance of the main shopping area, numerous banks, bars, restaurants and cafes. The hotel is also conveniently located close to the Central Station making it ideal for people who are on a city break and want to explore Glasgow.
The 95 bedroom Hotel has been converted from an industrial office building. The historic building was originally Glasgow’s first power station and was used to illuminate the Glasgow School of Art. Hotel Indigo brand standards don’t dictate the number or size of rooms in a property, making it ideally suited to conversion properties. Conversions are attractive to developers because they require less financing than new builds and can be up and running in a shorter period of time.
Indigo properties feature contemporary design and bold colours. The decor in each hotel is unique and reflects its location. From the moment guests enter the hotel they will be aware that this is a hotel firmly rooted in the city, with the artwork reflecting the history and architecture of the area from a mural of famous Glaswegians to paintings of 25 of Glasgow’s greatest heroes created by 25 up-and-coming local artists.
Kirk Kinsell, president, Europe, Middle East and Africa, IHG told TravelPlus: “Hotel Indigo Glasgow offers guests the best of both worlds – the individuality and unique design of a boutique hotel with the reassurance and benefits of a big hotel group. Hotel Indigo Glasgow is right in the heart of Glasgow which means it’s perfectly placed for people who want to explore the sights and sounds of the city.”
Hotel Indigo Glasgow joins two existing hotels in the UK. Hotel Indigo London Paddington opened in 2009, Hotel Indigo London Tower Hill followed in 2010. Hotel Indigo Liverpool, with 151 bedrooms, is scheduled to open in June 2011, followed by Hotel Indigo Edinburgh, Hotel Indigo Birmingham and Hotel Indigo Newcastle all scheduled to open in 2012.
