Cambridge Bike Tours, the first of its kind to provide a programme of bicycle tours around the city and surrounding areas. Amongst other bikes on offer tourists will also have the opportunity to ride some nostalgic and immaculately refurbished historic British bikes.
What better way to take in the fresh air, sup up the atmosphere and discover the hidden gems of one of the most beautiful of English cities. In contrast to the many walking tours available Cambridge Bike Tours cover more of the river and offer tourists a unique outdoors experience.
Cambridge is famous for its cycling and has over 80 miles of cycle paths and lanes to explore. It may therefore come as a surprise to learn that Cambridge Bike Toursis the first tour company in the city to offer a programme dedicated purely to bicycle tours.
The company, which officially takes to the streets on 16th April, has been set up by Anthony Dean, a former Kings College Choir School pupil and an avid cycle enthusiast who has competed in triathlons all over the world. Returning back to Cambridge after working for several years as a chartered surveyor in China and Australia Anthony was surprised to discover that despite having one of the UK’s largest tourist markets there was no bike tour operator in the city. Having sold his house in China he seized the opportunity and set up Cambridge Bike Tours.
“The tours are all about having fun, discovering and enjoying our wonderful city,” Anthony saID. He is also keen to point out that all tours are most definitely at a leisurely pace and to be enjoyed by people of all ages. As his family have lived in Cambridge for more than 100 years his knowledge of the city is second to none.
Cambridge Bike Tours will run a programme of four different tours operating every day of the week in the summer except Tuesdays. The City Tour covers the major sights of the city as well as a quick peek into some of Cambridge’s historic colleges. Expected to be particularly popular is the company’s Grantchester Tour, ideal for those wishing to explore Cambridge’s beautiful surrounding countryside and the pretty village of Grantchester. There’s even time to enjoy a cream tea and a visit to a couple of the great British pubs in the area. To get the best of both worlds Cambridge Bike Tours have included a 5 hour Full Day Tour which combines the City Tour and Grantchester in a gentle 8 mile ride. Mindful of the importance of the region being home to the UK’s only WW2 American Cemetery the company also provide an American Cemetery Tour which includes a visit to the cemetery and a ride to the village of Madingley. All tours cost £20 except the Full Day Tour at £33 and include the hire of one of Cambridge Bike Tours’historical British bikes along with helmets. Discounts are available for students, families and groups.
Those taking any of the tours can choose from a range of bikes including mountains bike as well the company’s classic collection of British bikes from the early sixties. The fleet currently includes New Hudson, Raleigh, Kerry Britain, Hercules and even a Traditional Postie’s Bike.
